1. Summary
The
Transparent Migration Manager (TMM) option of the IS1200 product family migrates
data from one NetApp tier of storage to another while leaving a stub
(pointer) behind on the primary NetApp storage tier. This stub provides
seamlessness of access to a client, which can double-click the stub and
recall the file from the archived storage system. This sort of implementation
is typically referred to as Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM). 2.
What’s New? Through diligent internal
testing and after having analyzed behavior of this optional feature in some
customer environments, it has been observed that there are several corner
cases in the implementation of the IS1200 TMM that might cause performance
and pose file access issues to clients. Further there is potential for data
loss under some user behavior circumstances. Therefore NetApp has decided to
pull back the TMM feature from being generally available in the market at
this time, and to make it available only through Feature PVR requests until
further notice. 3. Sales Tools (Sales Guides, Training Presentations, SE
Presentations) For prospective customers, the Feature PVR is a necessary
step in the sales process after having scoped the opportunity. The NetApp and
Kazeon teams have jointly authored several documents, including a best
practices document, to guide and manage account teams through the process of
qualifying and scoping a transparent migration opportunity. The process for
selling TMM under the feature PVR is as follows: ·
Account teams should carefully review all documents related to TMM ·
Account teams should filter the initial opportunity with Top
Qualification Questions even before filing a Feature PVR. If any one of the
answers is “no,” then account teams should walk away from the opportunity and
instead focus the customer discussion on basic file reporting for development
of file storage policies and basic scheduling, data movement, and/or customer
challenges in the area of governance for security and compliance. In other
words, all answers must be a confident “yes” to even qualify for a Feature
PVR. o
Is the customer currently running or willing to upgrade Data ONTAP® to
7.0.6 or 7.2.2+? o
Will the transparent migration solution be deployed only for a pure
CIFS-only environment? o
Is the customer willing to give up some performance on the primary
file server in exchange for saving primary storage space? o
Is there 20-30% CPU available on the primary appliances during normal
operation? ·
For accounts that meet Top Qualification Questions, the account team
will need to answer all the Feature PVR Questions and submit a Feature PVR
titled "Transparent Migration" and route it to Karthik Kannan
(kkannan@netapp.com) along with the answers to the questions in the Feature
PVR Questionnaire. ·
The PVR answers will be reviewed by a TMM committee consisting of
members from the product teams of NetApp and Kazeon, namely, Sunil Patel (sunilp@kazeon.com), Jay Desai (jdesai@kazeon.com), Mark Hayakawa (hayakawa@netapp.com), and Karthik
Kannan (kkannan@netapp.com), and the
PVR will subsequently be approved or rejected. 4.
Customer-Ready Tools (Customer Presentations,
Datasheets) See Sales Tools The minimum requirement is to run Data ONTAP 7.0.6 or
7.2.2 and above. See TSB-0704-03
on FPolicy fixes in these releases. The
quoter (CE) has the Transparent Migration option hidden to prevent ordering.
The affected part numbers are listed below.
Quoting Initiate a Feature PVR to request this feature after
reviewing and answering the basic and detailed questions per the instructions
in the Sales Tools section. Products need to be validated against the NetApp
Safety/EMI Regulatory Compliance List prior to order submission. The list is
available at PartnerCenter
Compliance Information. This is required to ensure that products are
being sold only in the countries in which NetApp has received regulatory
compliance certification. No change to warranty and service of all other options of
the IS1200. NetApp
is fully committed to the success of the IS1200-based solutions. Customers
regularly express strong interest in the ability to have better knowledge of
their unstructured data to optimize their file storage, as well as to solve
compliance issues for privacy, eDiscovery, and retention. NetApp
will continue to focus on two key use cases. 1.
File Reporting & Archival (Tiered Storage), to provide insights into information in
order to make management decisions on storage optimization storage 2.
Governance: Security and Compliance, to adhere to internal and external requirements
for security, privacy, eDiscovery, and compliance of unstructured data and
semi-structured data We
have many customers who have deployed IS1200 and are happy with its value,
particularly for the above mentioned use cases. Some of them are (note that
they are not public references): ·
Mayo Clinic – Governance (Security and
Compliance) ·
Kellogg’s – Governance (Security and
Compliance) ·
Dresdner Kleinwort – File Reporting &
Archival ·
Orbital Sciences – File Reporting &
Archival ·
Bartron Medical – Search ·
Williams Grand Prix – File Reporting &
Archival and Search ·
Fox Hollow Technologies – File Reporting
& Archival ·
Oxy Chemicals (Occidental Petroleum) – File Reporting & Archival
and Governance Also,
refer to the detailed TMM Customer Communication document on
Sales/PartnerEdge to learn about and articulate the top technical reasons why
we are not proceeding with TMM or recommending any other stub-based HSM
solution at this time. Please
